The city of Albert

Now known as the name of "the city with three bell towers", it is located on the Invasions Route, during its history it experienced seven complete destructions before 1914. Each time, its inhabitants courageously rebuilt it.

Until 1620, Albert was named Encre, then Ancre, name that we

Jusqu’en 1620, Albert s’appelle Encre, puis Ancre, name that we owe to Concino Concini, the last Marshal of France and Marquis of Ancre. He was the favourite of Marie de Medicis and played an important political role in France during the minority of Louis XIII. His political influence with the regent earned him the opposition of the young king and the courtiers who had him assassinated in 1617 in Paris. To erase the memory of this name which recalled that of one of the greatest adventurers in our history, Concino Concini, Louis XIII then gave the city the name of his new lord, his favourite and great falconer Charles of Albert, Duke of Luynes.

During the First World War and the Battles of the Somme, fights was violent around Albert. The center, the factories, the train station, the dome of the Basilica are destroyed during the fighting.

The city of Albert is also known for its pilgrimages and is also nicknamed the Little Lourdes of the North.
