The Cairn, Contalmaison

A little part of Scotland in the Somme !

If you go in this little village, you are not safe from coming across Scottish people in kilts !

Located next to the Contalmaison church, the monument in remembrance of McCrae Batallion, the 16th Royal Scots, is a cairn. Inaugured in November 7th 2004, the memorial is made from material from Scotland. The McCrae Batallion was mostly made with professionnals football players and supporters of different Scottish clubs including Heart of Midlothian which the monument also pays tribute. On July 1st 2016, beginning of the Battle of the Somme, the 16th Royal Scots managed to enter the defenses of Contalmaison before being outnumbered and forced to withdraw.

A ceremony for the soldier Donald Simpson Bell takes place every year at 11am on June 30th. A monument is erected is his memory on the very spot where he was killed, on July 10th 1916, 5 days after receiving the Victoria Cross, which is the hightest British distinction, because he attacked and destroyed a machine gun post. He belonged to the Yorkshire Regiment and was the first English Football player to volunteer in 1914.
