Gâteau Battu

There’s no successful family celebration here in the Poppy Country without ending a meal with a good slice of  "gâteau battu" served with jam and a cup of coffee!

It’s also served at major occasions—weddings, ceremonies, receptions, for afternoon tea, or even for breakfast, much to the delight of both young and old.

Guess what?  there’s no wrong time to enjoy it, and any occasion is a good one!

While its shape is curious, resembling a chef’s hat, its texture is delicious and light in flavor, yet rich in egg yolks.

Why is it called 'battu'? That’s the secret!

It comes from the fact that as it is being prepared, the batter is beaten by hand for a long time to achieve a soft and light consistency when baked.

However, it wasn’t until 1900 that it was recognized as a regional specialty, defended and promoted by the Noble Brotherhood of Beaten Cake since 1993.

Every year, the Brotherhood inducts new knights who are fervent defenders of this culinary specialty.

The organization of an annual competition for the best beaten cake has also helped to honor this product.
